Variable Speed

E11even2 Gallery’s upcoming exhibition “Variable Speed” features the work of Katy Clark and R!ch Cihlar. The two regional artists, in collaboration around the common theme of “birds,” take full flight, alighting on various media, styles, and techniques. Within the pedantic naturalism of John James Audubon and the reductive vision of Constantin Brancusi, Clark and Cihlar, in tandem, soar in their distinctive manifestations of the avian, airborne, the essence of the wonder of flight.

Recently returning to her hometown from Madison, Wisconsin, Katy Clark demonstrates a
lyrical fearlessness in all her work, readily veering from decorative illustration to bold
abstraction. With virtuosity in acrylic, gouache, watercolor, pen/ink, and cut-paper collage,
Clark can be joyfully gestural, intensely chromatic and then sinuously precise with controlled curvilinear line. Observing birds in nature, singularly or in flocks, she ranges from meditative to exuberant.

R!ch Cihlar, as part of Don’t Panic! has helped propel graffiti art into Cleveland’s cultural
mainstream. His work offers a dynamic counterpoint to Clark’s fluid brushwork and intricate draughtsmanship with his multi-layered, spray-painted stenciled forms. As Clark’s birds flutter and hum, Cihlar’s scream. Along with his paintings, he perpetuates the Pop vernacular by appropriating found objects in quirky crafted “skateboard birdhouses,” fully functional and ready for backyard birdwatching.

In preparation for “Variable Speed,” Cihlar states, “In its simplest form this exhibition will look like a bird themed show, but the constructive result will be the completed work from two artists who were given the same project but ended up with much different results.”
Celebrate Spring and anticipate Summer with “Variable Speed” at E11even2 Gallery. Surround yourself with images of birds, these magical, mysterious creatures that perch on our trees, peck at our flowers, and gloriously populate our skies.

Opening Reception for “Variable Speed” at the E11even2 Gallery is May 20, 5-9pm with the Closing Reception June 17, 5-9pm

Twenty Seven

27On May 20, 2016 e11even 2 will be hosting the opening of a new group exhibition titled 27*. The show’s theme will be based on some of the most famous musicians in history to die at the age of 27. Dozens have prematurely passed away at this age over the years. Curator of the show, Billy Nainiger has limited the number of musicians that will be included as inspiration for the contributing artists. Billy, who also co-owns e11even 2 with Christina Sadowski and R!ch Cihlar has narrowed the long list down to six, giving the show more cohesiveness.

15 artists, mostly based in Cleveland, were asked to create up to 3 pieces each based on Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, Brian Jones, Amy Winehouse, Jimi Hendrix, and/or Kurt Cobain. These six are widely considered to be the most famous of the “27 Club.” Pieces will range from painting, drawing, sculpture and mixed media.

Come check out 27* on May’s Third Friday at e11even 2 in the 78th Street Studios. You will not be disappointed in how these talented Cleveland artists interpret this legendary and short lived group of musicians.

Peek-A-Boo is the next “sex”hibition at E11even 2. It highlights the best features of classic Pin-Up girls. The opening reception is on Friday March 18th from 5-9p, during the 3rd Friday events at 78th Street Studios and features 16 local artists. Curator and owner, Christina Sadowski, says, “I collect pin-up girl tattoos and have always enjoyed those types of iconic images. Often people hear erotic and think dirty, but with this show the images are beautiful and classically posed nudes.” Sadowski says she doesn’t expect any controversy over the show. There are no explicit images, but does warn guests that it maybe more suited for an adult crowd.

Guests can also expect more then just art. Guest Pin-Up Queens will be on hand to enhance the atmosphere and pose with guests. Custom Peek-A-Book koozies will be given out, and Cleveland’s own Burlesque performer, Bella Sin, will give a performance at the closing reception on April 15th.
